about

This was recorded during a live event for filmmaker Kenneth Anger. Anger was in town for a couple of film showings of his Magic Lantern Cycle. This was to be sort of a party/ ball, finishing off the weeks events. I had a group of weirdo guys I played with called The Abrasion Ensemble that was asked to open for And You Will know Us By The Trail of Dead. We had a time limit of about 20 mins. It took an hour and a half to get set up. All I really remember about it was there was a room up in front of this place where Anger had set up court (this used to be the Capital Plaza movie theater -I think this was the concession stand area.). He had a circle of people around him in which he sat in the center of in a high backed rattan chair. Very regal. I remember seeing that room from the stage, with this white light coming from an open door, in a totally black, almost empty auditorium. After we were going for about 5 mins, the door closed. We lost our audience quicker than most gigs I've done. Such is life. Still, a good, sometimes harsh recording showcasing the AE at its peak of power. A weird side note, a guy showed up from San Antonio that was a buddy of one of the guys. His name was Chris Branca. I'd never seen him before in my life, and haven't seen him since. And this was 23 years ago. But he played a mean shortwave. I don't think we ever spoke more than a few words together. Maybe we didn't need to.
